How to Use Chasteberries Tincture

Fill a jar 1/3 with dried chasteberries, cover with 80-proof vodka. Seal and store in a dark spot for 4-6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain through cheesecloth into a dropper bottle. Take 20-30 drops in water once daily.*

Decoction

Simmer 1 tsp crushed dried chasteberries in 1 cup water, covered, for 10-15 minutes. The tough berries need gentle boiling to release their compounds. Strain, cool slightly, and drink one cup daily.*

Honey (Electuary)

Grind 2 tbsp dried chasteberries into a coarse powder. Stir into 1/2 cup raw honey until fully coated. Store in a sealed jar for 2 weeks, stirring occasionally. Take 1 tsp daily by spoon or in warm water.*

Capsules

Grind dried chasteberries into a fine powder with a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle, then sift out coarse bits. Fill empty size “00” capsules by hand or with a capsule machine. Store airtight; take 1-2 capsules daily.*

I have a soft spot for chasteberry, partly because it’s so unlike most of the herbs on my herb shelf. Also called vitex or chaste tree, Vitex agnus-castus carries an old nickname, “monk’s pepper,” that shows just how bold and peppery this little berry really is.

In flavor, chasteberry is earthy and sharp, with a spicy, almost black pepper quality and a hint of bitterness underneath. It’s not a soft, easy sipping tea on its own. I usually pair it with gentler herbs like rose, lemon balm, or red raspberry leaf so the final blend feels rounded instead of overwhelming.
