What is Ashwagandha?

It’s a plant of Solanaceae family, a.k.a Winter Cherry or Indian Ginseng. The botanical name is Withania somnifera. It’s cultivated in drier regions of India, Nepal and China.

The name somnifera means “sleep-inducing” in Latin. The name, ashwagandha, is a combination of the Sanskrit words ashva, meaning horse, and gandha, meaning smell, reflecting that the root has a strong horse-like odor.

Ashwagandha Properties

Ashwagandha is most known calming adoptogen in Ayurveda. Especially, its roots are having exceptional values.

The beneficial constituents in Ashwagandha root powder are Withanolides and other Alkaloids. Withanolides are structurally similar to ginsenosides of Panax Ginseng.

Iyasa Organic Ashwagandha Powder is sourced from rural part of India. It is made out of dried roots of the Ashwagandha plant and it is beige in color. It is natural and pure. It mixes easily with water, juice or smoothie and perfectly suitable for all types of consumption.

Our powder is natural root powder and it has not standardized for content of Withanolides, hence content of Withanolides varies from 0.5 to 1.5%.

Directions to use

It can be taken with food or on empty stomach. Classically it is taken with warm milk, honey and Ghee.Taking Ashwagandha Root Powder with warm water/milk and a pinch of black pepper increases its absorption from the stomach.To mask intense flavor and taste of it, consider adding cardamom powder, chocolate powder, fennel seeds or honey into the recipe.

Sleep Tonic Latte

Ingredients:

1 cup organic almond milk.1 tsp Ashwagandha Root PowderHoney and vanilla extractA pinch of holiday spices (cinnamon,clove,nutmeg)

Directions:

Blend all the ingredients except honey in blender, pour the mixture into vessel and gently boil it on a stove. Take the latte in cup, add honey for sweetness as you desired. Best enjoyed as bedtime drink or at bedtime to induce sleep.

Ashwagandha Tea

Ingredients:

1 cup of hot water½ tsp of Organic Ashwagandha Root Powder½ tsp of GheePinch of black pepper½ tsp of honey, if needed.

Directions:

Bring 1 cup of water to boil in a pot. Add ½ teaspoon (2 gm) of Ashwagandha Root Powder and pinch of black pepper to the water. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Strain it into the cup. Add ½ tsp of ghee and Honey if desired. Best to enjoy in the morning as a replacement of coffee.
